Container candles are a beautiful way to accent your home, especially in the bathroom. To make your candle stand out, choose glassware that is both sturdy and simple in design. The glass containers can be purchased for a low price at most retail or craft stores. You can generally find great deals at yard sales, flea markets, and thrift stores as well. Try to find glassware with lids if possible.
Clean all the glass before using them to prevent dust or other particles from building up inside. If you have a dishwasher, a quick rinse cycle will do the trick. For safety reasons, it is not recommended to make container candles in anything other than glass containers.
Before you begin making your container candles, you’ll need a few supplies in addition to your glassware. You’ll need to get quality wax, dye, fragrances, wicks (with tabs), and a double boiler. The wick should be long enough to touch the bottom of the container and extend 3–4 inches above the top of the container. The extra wick material at the top of the container will make it easier to hold it in place while the wax mixture is hardening. You can use either paraffin wax or beeswax.
Melt the wax in the double boiler to a temperature of about 110 degrees Fahrenheit, then add your color and scent. For best results, microwave the glass containers for a minute or two. This prevents the wax from leaving unsightly air pockets in the container as it hardens. For easy cleanup, place the glass container on a cookie sheet.
There are a few ways to insert the wick. Place a small amount of hot wax in the bottom of the container to secure the wick’s tab. Then, place a pen or clothespin over the top of the container and wrap the wick around it to keep the wick straight, then pour the hot wax into the container, leaving an inch at the top.
Another option is to fill each container with the heated wax mixture, leaving one inch at the top for the candle to burn without dripping outside of the container. Depending on the size of the container, let the candle cool for a few minutes, then gently place a wick into the container. It must be in a liquid form to place the wick tab on the bottom of the container, so don’t let it harden all the way. The goal is to let the wax cool enough to avoid burns, while it’s malleable enough to allow the wick to pass through. Next, place the candle wick on the bottom of the jar by taking a ballpoint pen apart and discarding the inside that holds the ink. Then, with the wick pulled through the inside of the empty pen shell, push the top of the pen to the end of the wick tab, and guide it into place at the bottom of the jar.
Lastly, you can lay a clothespin across the top of the container, then clamp the top of the wick with the clothespin to keep the wick standing up straight and centered, with the bottom of the wick just touching the bottom of the container. Keep an eye on it to make sure the wick stays in the center of the container as the wax hardens. Once the candles are completely cool, cut the wick to ½ inch above the top of the container.
You can get creative with your candles by decorating the jars with paint, color sequins, glitter, or anything that you like. Consider attaching a colored ribbon, yarn, or twine to the top of the container for a simple yet elegant design. Container candles are designed to burn down to nearly nothing, allowing you to get the most out of each one. The jars keep the flame from escaping and the wax from dripping, preventing fire hazards. It’s still important to keep them out of the reach of children and never leave them unattended when they’re burning. If you’re going to pick up or move the candle, make sure it’s completely cooled to prevent serious burns.
Candles add beauty and delightful aromas to your home, but caution should always be used when burning them. Container candles are very simple and inexpensive to make. They also add beauty and romance to any occasion. These candles leave the maker with lots of room to be creative. For a fun family night, make memories by allowing your children to decorate the jars while you work with the hot wax.
